The primary difference between neutral and earth is safety.
Although both eventually terminate to earth they have
seperate functions. Using an electric drill as an example.
Neutrals provide a closed circuit, or path, which allows
the drill to function. The earth ground is provided in case
of a short inside the drill. The electricity will go
through the earth ground instead of the person using the
drill, preventing injury or death. Anyone old enough can
remember the old 2-prong wall outlets. The earth ground
safety is why we now use 3-prong outlets.
