What is the difference btwn grounding and earthing?
Answer Posted / usman saleem
"Grounding" is the preferred term in the US and "Earthing"
is the preferred term in England. Other countries would
likely have equivalent terms, but in their own languages.
The earth is the ground, e.g., to a farmer. When A/C power
is generated by a huge electric generator it usually
supplies electricity using three conductors all out of
phase with each other (three phase electricity) and an
additional conductor connects to ground (or earth). You can
see the three wires that result atop most power poles and
high-tension lines. When you "ground" one phase you get 110
Volts, two phases obtain 220 Volts and all three phases
obtain 440 Volts, but all circuits are also grounded to
complete the "circuit" back to the generating station.
Houses receive 110 and 220 Volts service for light bulbs
and clothes driers, respectively. Machine shops also need
440 Volts service for large motors which are the reverse of
three-phase generators. All these circuits require proper
grounding (earthing) to avoid electrocutions that could
occur if a person accidentally completed the ground (earth).
