The message flow in SAP XI involves several steps:
1. Source system initiates a message, which is then sent to an adapter.
2. The adapter converts the message into a format suitable for SAP XI (e.g., EDI or XML).
3. The converted message is stored in a queue at the IDoc Interface.
4. An integration process (IDoc or BAPI) retrieves the message from the queue and processes it according to the defined business rules.
5. The processed message is then sent to the target system via an adapter.
6. If required, messages can be stored in a database or file for later processing or analysis.
