LINUX is not an acronym; it's a play on words. It's named after Linus Torvalds, its creator. UNIX, on the other hand, has a few official names: System V (System Five), Version 7 (Seventh Edition) from AT&T, and Unics (Uniplexed System). However, it's more commonly referred to as UNIX.
