The Depletion Region is a region inside a semiconductor material that extends from the pn junction to the surface of the semiconductor. It is called a 'depletion' region because it contains no mobile charge carriers (electrons or holes). The depletion region forms when positive ions from the p-side and negative ions from the n-side move towards the junction to counterbalance the charges of electrons and holes that have diffused across the junction.
