What is the difference between snowflake and star schema? What are situations where snowflake schema is better than star schema when the opposite is true?

Answer Posted / Nishant Saxena

The main difference between Snowflake Schema and Star Schema lies in their normalization level. Star Schema has a denormalized design with minimal joins, whereas Snowflake Schema is more normalized and may require multiple joins. Situations where Snowflake Schema might be better than Star Schema include: 1) Reducing data redundancy for large fact tables with fewer foreign keys. 2) Simplifying ETL processes by allowing the separation of closely related dimensions into sub-dimensions. However, the opposite is true when dealing with simpler data structures or when reducing join complexity is a priority.
