The GSM encryption algorithm consists of two parts: A5/0 (plain text algorithm) and A5/1, A5/2, or A5/3 (encryption algorithms). A5/0 is an unsecured version of the algorithm used for testing purposes only. The secure versions are A5/1, a simple substitution cipher, A5/2, a linear feedback shift register (LFSR) based stream cipher, and A5/3, a more complex LFSR-based cipher.
