Stars are formed from clouds of gas and dust known as nebulae. When parts of a nebula collapse under their own gravity, they heat up and form protostars. Over millions to tens of millions of years, the protostar continues to heat up and contract until nuclear fusion starts, at which point it becomes a main-sequence star.
