Difference between Site Definition and Site Template?
Answer Posted / Ramakant Sachan
In SharePoint, both site definitions and site templates allow you to create new sites with a specific structure. However, there are some differences between them:
1. Scope: A site definition is a complete set of files, features, and Web Parts that make up a particular type of site collection, such as the Team Site or Publishing Portal. Site definitions have a wide scope, covering multiple sites in a single site collection.
2. Flexibility: Site templates are more flexible than site definitions because they only contain the specific files, features, and Web Parts for a single site. This allows you to easily customize a site template to meet your specific needs.
3. Customization: Site definitions are typically created by Microsoft and are less customizable than site templates, which can be created by administrators or developers.
