A message type refers to a structure that defines the content of a message sent within SAP, while an IDoc type refers to a predefined structure used for electronic data exchange between SAP systems or with non-SAP systems. In other words, a message type is used for internal communication within SAP, and an IDoc type is used for external data integration.
