To determine the day of the week for a given date, we can use the formula: day = (d + ((m - 3) / 4) + y + y/4 - y/100 + y/400) % 7 where d is the day (January is 1), m is the month (12 for January), and y is the year. Plugging in the values, we get: (12 + ((1 - 3) / 4) + 1979 + 1979/4 - 1979/100 + 1979/400) % 7 = (12 - 3 + 1979 + 494.75 - 19.79 + 4.75) % 7 = (2086.5) % 7 = 6 (modulo 7). Therefore, January 12, 1979 was a Friday.
