Explain GSM/CDMA/LTE/IMS architecture?

Answer Posted / Akhilendra Kumar Singh

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) are 2nd generation mobile communication systems. LTE (Long Term Evolution) is a 4th generation standard that improves data rates, latency, and spectral efficiency over GSM/CDMA. IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is an IP-based architecture for delivering converged voice, video, messaging, and other multimedia services to mobile devices.nnGSM architecture consists of BTS (Base Transceiver Station), BSC (Base Station Controller), MSC (Mobile Switching Center), VLR (Visitor Location Register), HLR (Home Location Register). CDMA uses RNC (Radio Network Controller) instead of BSC. LTE replaces BSC with eNB (Evolved NodeB) and has S-GW (Serving Gateway) and P-GW (Packet Data Network Gateway). IMS architecture includes CSCF (Call Session Control Function), IBCF (Interrogating-GAIN Bearer Control Function), PGW (P-Gateway), and SF (Session Function).
