IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) is the fourth revision of the Internet Protocol, the principal communications protocol used in the Internet. It provides an addressing system allowing networks to interconnect based on unique address identifiers. IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the latest version of the Internet Protocol that has been designed to replace IPv4. IPv6 was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and is intended to provide a solution to the long-anticipated problem of IPv4 address exhaustion.
