Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers have a duty of care in five main areas: providing a safe work environment, ensuring safe systems of work, providing adequate training, maintaining equipment, and providing necessary protective clothing and equipment. The aspect of health and safety law that is influenced by European legislation is the harmonization of regulations, such as the Health and Safety Framework Directive (89/391/EEC).
