Newton's law of viscosity, also known as Newton-Stokes law, relates the shear stress within a fluid to its rate of strain (or shear rate). It states that the shear stress is proportional to the rate of strain, with the constant of proportionality being the dynamic viscosity (η) of the fluid. Mathematically, this relationship can be written as τ = η * dU/dy, where τ is the shear stress, η is the dynamic viscosity, dU/dy is the rate of strain, and y is the direction perpendicular to the area over which the stress acts.
