To design a built-up column carrying an axial load of 1200 kN with a length of 8 m, you can use steel sections such as channels or angles. Here's an example solution using four equal CH250x100 channel sections:
Number of sections = Load / (Yield stress * Cross-sectional area per section)
Load/section = 1200 kN / 4 = 300 kN
Area per section = 250 mm x 100 mm x 1 = 25,000 mm^2 = 25,000 cm^2 = 0.025 m^2
Yield stress = 250 MPa = 250 N/mm^2
Axial load per section = 300 kN = 3,000,000 N
Yield force per section = 3,000,000 N / 250 N/mm^2 = 12,000 mm = 12 m (assuming no end fixity)
Therefore, the column length should be greater than 12 m to accommodate four equal sections with an overall length of 8 m.
