It is the angular setting provided between the reference voltage and operating current beyond which the relay will operate. During the normal operating conditions, the MTA should be adjusted to cos theta= 0. so the angle should be 90 degrees. But once any forward side fault occurs in the system, the angular difference will be less than zero so the operating quantity will be more than restaining quantity.
