Difference between milestone and periodic billing?

Milestone is nothing but if customer has to pay 1000$ in in 12 months then he can pay it either 200$ or 100$, 400$ every month in fulfilling the the total amount.
Periodic billing in this if customer as to pay 10000$ the the total amount is divided as 10000$/12.
