Why do we use stirrups in columns?
Answer Posted / eng. wesam m. nabus
COLUMNS STIRRUPS (NOT HOOKS (KEYS)) have two purposes: 1>to fix and prevent the longitudinal (main) steel bars in columns to bulging under the vertical forces (compression force) specially in the middle of the column before reach the concrete. 2>and also intensify the quantities (diameter or by spacing) of stirrups at both ends of the column for the purpose of resisting the horizontal forces that generate horizontal shear forces on both ends of the column. SO WE CAN NOT SAY COLUMN STIRRUPS HAVE THE SAME PURPOSE OF BEAM STIRRUPS. AND ALSO THERE ARE HOOKS YOU CAN USE IN THE COLUMNS BUT ARE NOT FOR THE SAME PROPOSE OF THE STIRRUPS.
