the first bank established in India was Bank of Hindustan (1770-1829)followed by General Bank of India (estd. 1786)both are now defunct. Presidency Bank of Calcutta(1806, which immediately became Bank of Bengal) can be considered as the the oldest bank of India, and still running after the merger with two other presidency banks named Presidency Bank of Bombay and Presidency Bank of Madras under the one name Imperial bank of India (now known as State Bank of India).
