how would we know a file system exists on a slice when it
is unmounted from its mount point.
please anyone help me out.

I dont think you can check FS on unmounted slice.
etc/vfstab only tells you about FS mounted/to e mounted at
system boot.
#df -h only tells you mounted FS
and fsck only check and allow you to fix any errors. it
doesn't tells you about the FS on slice.
