if ac or dc what are the advantages and disadvantages?????

The overhead supply of the train is 25kv ac,single phase.
In earlier locomotives this ac supply was converted to dc
to run the DC Series Motor of locomotives.
But now a days, due to availability of IGBT converters &
speed controller drives, single phase induction motors are
being used. These single phase induction motors have better
efficiency and are more robust and maintenance free than
the DC Series motors, and so they are preferred choice for
locomotives these days
