your question is what is use of earth pits,
my answer is to discharge the electric current
next your question how it will function,
my answer is in our earth is a good conductor in electricity so, when ever fault developing time fault current goes to earth electrode and then goes to discharge to ground,
.

my answer is zero,
next your question is how we are improve our earth resistance
my answer is to maintain dry condition in your earth pits and don't maintain the earth bit OK.
