what is nis server

Answer Posted / gaurav chourey

NIS ( Network Information Services )

NIS is developed by Sun Microsystem, it is also base product
of Sun Microsystem,it is Domain controller server, it
controls all network users login by a domain, there are two
types of NIS Server

1. NIS master Server
2. NIS slave Server

all network users information will be stored in NIS master
server and their image will be mapped on all NIS slave server.

Suppose our NIS server has been crashed or ShutDown then NIS
slave will provide user information for network login. In
this case we should not reboot or ShutDown their NIS slave
until the master server up.

==> NIS is a distributed database system.

NIS server is also known as network login server and yellow
pages server.
NIS server just like ADS server in comparison
of windows.
