there is a line fault some where on the ove head
distribution line. how will i locate the fault for clearing
it? ofcourse i have to megger the line but what information
makes me clear that the fault is in that section of the
line?

The fault if is in a over head distribution line it is
generally taken care by the protection system (Relays/
CBs)This gives the answer of your question as What
Information makes it clear that the fault is in that section
of line. And as the protection system is quite selective (It
is its important feature while selecting the protection)
Even then if fault occours in Line (Not Cable) The visual
inspection is carried out once the span is known. (Generally
Open Circuit (Breaking of conductor)or short circuit (LG,
LLG,LL fault has occoured due to insulation failure or tree
fallen, or Snake, or Bird)
If it is a cable Megger is the best option to use. The
solution is to join the cable (Not Done Generally) or to
replace it.
For information: THE CABLE IS THUS REQUIRED TO FACE THE
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TESTS AFTER MANUFACTURING. AS WE DONT
INSTALL ANY BACKUP FOR CABLE.
