why dont we connect the two 12 V DC batteries in parallel,
for an inverter (UPS)?

is there any harm ?

Answer Posted / lokeshraj

If the batteries are identical there is no problem in
connecting parallel, but if the internal resistances are
different then there will be a circulatery current in
batteries as in transformers... this may heatup the
batteries.
