wat is the difference between rotor 1st stage fault and 2nd
stage fault?
Answer Posted / imrakesh
Hi friend i m glad dat u came up with a question like dat .
i appreciate ur indepth study of power system .
well basically the rotor system of altenators are unearthed
due to which the single gound fault at the rotor doesnt
actually disturbs the rotor as there is no fault current ,
however if a second gorund to earth faukt develops then the
short circuit between the windings results as the fault
current gets a path to flow . the former is called the 1st
stage fault while the latter is called the 2nd stage fault.

Is a contactor (or master relay) required between incoming lines and a VFD? The question goes to safety. If a contactor were used before the VFD and an e-stop engaged then the motor will coast to a stop (i.e. VFD loses power) instead of stopping much faster if the VFD braking fucntion were used. It would make more sense to keep power on the VFD.

A 15 kw squirrel cage motor having a maximum efficiency of 90% on a continuous full load has temperature rise of 42 degrees celcius after 30 min and 52 degrees celcius after 1 hr under the above operation conditions. a) calculate its final steady state temperature rise on continuous load and the heating time constatnt. b) if the motor is operated on a short load for 9 min estimate its temperature rise. c) calculate the maximum overload that can be applied on a short, 9 min rating so that the temperature rise is the same as the final steady state temperature rise on continuous load.
