A sensor containing a processing device that performs spontaneous digital signal processing and conditioning when it receives multiplexed sensor inputs is called a Smart Sensor. When this input, after processing, algorithmic decision-making and actuating, becomes an output signal, the smart sensor behaves as a transmitter. This dual-function is why it is called a smart sensor/transmitter.
