address and mac address why we are not using mac address instead of ip address

Hi,
Ip address is defined as Internet Protocol for
communicating with outside Network and MAC address is
defined as Ethernet Address or lan card or Hardware device
address which is aplha Numeric and whereas IP address is
Numeric.
