What is the difference between the prompt and cascading

Prompts: Prompts takes the input parameters/values from the
users(from the list of values) and run the report/query
based on the user selection.
Cascading Prompts: are also prompts, but its a link of
chain based on user section values..
Eg: first prompt asks the user to select the Country from
the list of countries, then it filters at the backend and
asks the user to select the state to select( these are
states only belong to that above country)...then goes to
cities which only belong to that above state...
