Can transformer develop three phase power from a single
phase source?
Answer Posted / ashok bhatnagar
There are two ways to do it :-
1. A single phase AC supply can be converted to two phase
by using a capacitor to provide 90 degree phase shift as
done in single hase AC motors. The two phase supply so
obtained can be converted to three phase using a scott
connected trasformer pair.
2. Use a single phase AC / universal motor to run a three
phase AC generator. The output will be three phase.

As we use capacitior bank in 3ph ckt for improvement of PF, why not we use capacitor in single phase domestric use, at our house their are many inductive equipments, like fan, mixer, tube choke, air conditioner they also draw PF... by using capacitor can they improve PF. if yes--what are advantage and how to connect a capactor in single ph,and which type of capacitor if no- what are disadvantages.
A 500 V shunt motor runs at its normal speed of 250rpm when the armature current is 200A. The resistance of the armature is 0.12 Ω. Calculate the speed when a resistance is inserted in the field reducing the shunt field to 80% of normal value and the armature current is 100A.

A 400 V, 50 Hz, Δ connected synchronous generator has a field reactance of 0.1 Ω and armature resistance of 0.015 Ω. At full load, the machine supplies 1200 A at 0.8 pf lagging. Under full-load conditions, the friction and windage losses are 40 KW and the core losses are 30 KW. What is the machine’s overall efficiency? Ignore any field circuit losses.
