if root user forget the password how to change it?

firstly reboot the system then when so grub loader screen
then select linux option by pressing up and down aero key.
then press e for edit,this line display three linse select
kernel option line i.e.
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6---------
then press once again (e),it will display grub edit promt
i.e grub edit>kernel/vmlinuz -------
at last above line give one space and then write 1 then
press enter and then press (b) to boot the os. Then
It will display single user shell prompt i.e
sh-3.2#passwd(written)
then provide new password.
then reboot
