For a perfectly elastic collission
velocity of seperation=velocity of approach and for
perfectly inelastic collission velocity of seperation =0;
bodies are neither perfectly elastic or inelastic.
in that case
velocity of seperation=e where e=velocity of approach;
where 0<e<1 constant e depends on materials of colloiding
bodies.
This constant is known as "coefficient of restitution".
