an ice block submurged in the water, if the ice melt level
of water
Answer Posted / rich
Density of ice is 0.92 g^cm3. Density of water at 4 degree
= 1g^cm3. Start with say 10litres water with 1litre block
of ice submerged in it: total volume = 11litres. The ice
melts.
From answer #6, volume2 = volume1*density1/density2
Volume2 = 1*0.92/1 = 0.92litres
new total volume is 10 + 0.92 = 10.92 litres hence level
falls.
critical factor is that the ice is assumed to be fully
submerged. If it was floating it simply displaces its own
mass of water. When it melts the mass stays the same but
is now water so level stays the same
