How does common salt help in separating soap from the
solution after saponification ?
1 By decreasing solubility of soap
2 By increasing solubility of soap
3 By decreasing density of soap
4 By increasing density of soap
Answer Posted / sa
Soap is nothing but Na+ or k+ salt of fatty acids, and when
saponification occurs then esters of fatty acids and
glycerols are produced. So when NaCl or commom is added
due to common ion effect of Na+, equillibrium is shifted
toward left and esters of fatty acids and glycerols breaks
to produce more fatty acids which then combine with Na+ to
remove excess Na+ from the system
