In Excel, a cell reference can be either absolute or relative. An absolute reference (denoted by $ before both column and row letters) remains constant when copied to other cells, while a relative reference adjusts to the cell where it is pasted. For example, if cell A1 is referred to as $A$1, it remains $A$1 regardless of where it is copied; but if referred to as A1, it changes to B1 when copied to cell B1.
