To turn off automatic updates in Windows XP, go to 'Start', then select 'Control Panel'. In Control Panel, navigate to 'Automatic Updates' and click on 'Change'. In the subsequent dialog box, select 'Never check for updates' or 'Download updates but let me choose whether to install them'. Click 'OK' to save the changes.
