To save a package as a separate file in Visual SourceSafe (VSS), follow these steps:
1. Right-click the project or solution in Solution Explorer.
2. Select 'Package/Publish' from the context menu.
3. In the Package Manager dialog, select the desired output format and destination folder.
4. Click 'Save All' to save the package as a separate file.
