Magento was founded by Roy Rubin and Yoav Kutner in 2007. Initially called Varien, Inc., they developed a commercial eCommerce platform named Magento Enterprise Edition (EE). In 2008, they released the open-source Community Edition (CE) as well. Magento was later acquired by eBay in 2011 and then by Permira, an investment firm, in 2015. Since 2018, Adobe has been the owner of Magento.
