IP addresses are arranged in a hierarchical format known as dotted-decimal notation. Each of the four numbers, separated by periods (.), represents an octet, or eight bits. The first number represents the network address, the second and third numbers represent the subnet, and the fourth number represents the host address within that specific subnet. IP addresses can be displayed in both decimal and hexadecimal format.
