William Perkin discovered aniline dyes in 1856. He did
some experiments and discovered Mauveine an extract from
coal tar. Mauveine was a bright purple dye synthesized
under laboratory conditions and it revolutionized the
textile industry. Perkin made a fortune from his discovery
of aniline dyes.
