Network Information Service (NIS) is a system for managing and distributing system configuration data across a network of computers. It allows administrators to centrally define and manage common configuration data, such as user account information, file systems, and network settings, and automatically distribute this data to client systems. NIS is used on UNIX-like operating systems, including IBM AIX.
