Metadata in HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) refers to the data that describes other data. This includes information about files and directories such as their locations, permissions, replication levels, and access times. The main metadata files associated with HDFS are the fsimage file and the edit log (also known as the transaction log). The fsimage is a snapshot of the filesystem's state at a particular point in time, while the edit log records all changes made to the filesystem since the last fsimage was taken.
