An AMI (Amazon Machine Image) is a complete template for a virtual server, including the operating system, software libraries, and applications. A snapshot is a point-in-time copy of a volume that you can use to create new volumes or other snapshots. In essence, an AMI contains an OS and software, while a snapshot contains data.
