Multiple instances of svchost.exe may be running because they host several different services for your operating system. Each service might have its own svchost process, and some services require multiple processes to function properly. If you notice an unusually high number of svchost processes, you can use the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to check which services are using significant resources.
