Microarrays are small glass or silicon chips that contain thousands to millions of specific DNA, RNA, or protein probes arrayed in a precise pattern. In DNA microarrays, the probes are short fragments of known DNA sequences that bind to complementary sequences on samples being analyzed. This allows for the simultaneous measurement of gene expression levels in multiple genes. Microarrays are used extensively in research and diagnostics, such as gene expression analysis, genetic variation analysis, and genotyping.
