In scleroderma, the specific self-antigens are not well defined. However, it is believed to involve an autoimmune response against various components of the extracellular matrix, such as type I collagen, fibronectin, and laminin. This leads to excessive accumulation of collagen and fibrosis in the skin and other organs, causing thickening, hardening, and stiffness.
