In case of welded vessels why is stress relieving in the form of post-weld treatment necessary?

Stress relieving (also known as annealing) is a heat treatment process applied to welded vessels to reduce residual stresses and distortions caused by the welding process. These stresses can lead to cracks, leaks, or even vessel failure over time. Stress relieving involves heating the weld area above the critical temperature (Austenite temperature) followed by slow cooling to allow for strain relief and microstructural transformation.
