To size a partial combustion reactor for methane-oxygen combustion, you can follow these steps:
1. Determine the desired reaction stoichiometry based on the desired fuel-to-air ratio (usually between 0.5 and 2.0).
2. Calculate the molar flow rates of methane and oxygen using the total moles of gas in the reactor, assuming ideal gas behavior.
3. Choose an appropriate reactor configuration, such as a tubular or packed bed reactor, considering factors like heat transfer requirements, pressure drop limitations, and mixing efficiency.
4. Estimate the required reactor volume based on the reaction kinetics, assuming first-order or other suitable reaction kinetic models.
5. Calculate the reactor length using the desired residence time (based on safety considerations and reaction completion).
6. Select an appropriate pressure drop estimation method for calculating the pressure difference between inlet and outlet of the reactor.
