Frequency compensation is necessary in practical operational amplifiers (op-amps) to ensure stability when used as an active filter. Without compensation, op-amps can exhibit instability due to phase shifts in the feedback loop. Compensation circuits help maintain phase margin and gain margin within acceptable limits, ensuring stable operation.
